Comparing Yourself to Others Destroys Your Confidence

Comparison feels natural, especially in a professional environment where achievements are visible and success is celebrated publicly. But comparison is also one of the quickest ways to erode your self-esteem. The moment you measure your progress through someone else’s accomplishments, you lose sight of your own growth.

When I began my speaking journey, I compared myself to everyone: the polished presenters, the charismatic performers, the confident communicators who seemed miles ahead. My early speeches were shaky—I once forgot the entire story about my dog, Toby, while standing in front of an audience. It was embarrassing, but it was also a turning point. My husband reminded me, “There will always be someone more experienced, more successful, more everything. The only person you need to outshine is who you were yesterday.”

That shift changed everything. I stopped chasing other people’s pace and started recognising my own progress. Step by step, speech by speech, I grew—and five years later, I placed third in the UK Humorous Speech Contest.

Your journey is unique. Your failures, your strengths, your timing, your story—all of it belongs only to you. When you compare yourself only to yourself, you reclaim your confidence. Growth becomes clearer, success becomes measurable, and your inner critic becomes quieter. Progress, not comparison, is the foundation of healthy self-esteem.
